Optimal growth for Japanese Spirea is achieved in well-drained soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Enhance soil quality by adding organic matter, like compost, before planting to increase fertility and drainage. Dig a hole slightly larger than the root ball and place the plant at ground level. Fill the hole with soil and gently firm it around the base. These plants typically spread 2-3 feet wide, so spacing should be about 2-3 feet apart for desired density.
