Prepare the soil before planting by amending it with organic matter, such as compost, in order to enhance drainage and fertility. Remove any clumps or debris, and create a hole twice as wide as the root ball, making it just as deep. This will allow for easy spread of the roots. Gently detach the shrub from its container and loosen the roots. Place the shrub in the center of the hole, ensuring it is at the same depth as it was in the container. Fill the hole with soil, gently pressing it around the roots to eliminate air pockets. Thoroughly water the newly planted shrub to help settle the soil. During the initial growing season, maintain consistently moist soil without overwatering. Once established, Potentilla fruticosa is drought-resistant and requires less watering.
